Jenny had heard it all from her sister, Dora, a psychology major in college.
"Do you know people always expect others to do the right thing?" Dora once asked. "I mean—not even when they could easily help someone."
"I won't do that," Jenny had replied then, brushing off Dora's piece of information. "You always try to scare me!"
She would still disregard Dora's theory, but now she had witnessed something that helped change her mind. That morning, she had just gotten out of the car and was walking toward the classroom building. It was the summer that Texas saw a lot of rain. Jenny was trying to balance the umbrella, her iPod, and her lunchbox when she slipped and fell. Down went the iPod into a puddle and out came the books from her backpack. Just when she thought the mess could not get worse, the heels of her shoes broke while the umbrella blew away with the wind. That was when Jenny realized she was going to be late to class. Others who were also running late swiftly walked passed by without noticing her ordeal. Nobody even paused. "Wish at least one of you were a Good Samaritan," Jenny exclaimed with a sigh. That was when she saw a little pair of little hands lifting her belongings from the mud.

What is the best reason the author refers to the Good Samaritan in this passage?
A.
Nobody helps Jenny unselfishly.
B.
Jenny lacks faith in science.
C.
Jenny learns the truth the hard way.
D.
Dora thinks people are selfless.

Answers

Answer 1

The reason why the author uses the words "Good Samaritan," making an allusion to the biblical story, is because Dora believes people are selfless, option D.

What is an allusion?

An allusion is the act of mentioning someone or something that is well known. In the story under analysis here, the author mentions the "Good Samaritan," which is an allusion to a biblical story. The good Samaritan was a person who helped a man in need even though he had nothing to gain from it. He did out of selflessness.

The story is precisely about selflessness. Dora believes people are selfless, but Jenny does not. When Jenny screams out that she wishes someone were a good Samaritan, she is basically saying that no one will help her, no one is altruistic. But someone does. She was wrong, apparently.

Therefore, the words "Good Samaritan" are present in the story because of what Dora says about people being selfless. Option D seems to be the best answer choice.

Answer:

WATER BOTTLES SHOULD BE BANNED

Ever wonder why plastic is the main source of trash in oceans and in landfills? What people don’t realize is that it’s creating a lot more problems by the minute.  Bottled waters should be banned. Bottled water is bad for the environment and it’s easier to fill up a cup full of the filtered tap.

Getting bottled water may seem convenient at times, say, at a gym or a theme park. But the bad sides of it outweigh the benefits. When people get bottled water, they usually forget to recycle it when they are finished, and about only 40% of it gets recycled, according to a 2019 survey at Virginia Beach. Sure, there are biodegradable water bottles, but there aren’t enough. They’re expensive and hard to find; hence major water bottle manufacturers don’t accept them. And that’s why most people are careless about it: Bottled water isn’t biodegradable, it doesn’t get recycled often, and they aren’t sellable worldwide.

Filling up the tap is much easier because it helps the environment, it saves money (yes, that 2 dollar bill), and, of course, it’s free. Staying at home and simply not going to the store to get bottled water helps the environment!! The cups,(free at home) and water,(also free at home) are great ways of money management.

Finally, down deep in the last paragraph. The reason why bottled water should be banned is. Plastic takes 500 years to break down, according to a study at Harvard University in 2020. FIVE HUNDRED. What a shocker. We need to recycle plastic. But what most people don’t realize, is that the future of our planet is at stake. For the ocean, for the animals, for the people. And the people after them. Slowly, but surely, the planet is dying down. Plastic pollution causes harm to humans, animals, and plants through toxic pollutants. It can take hundreds or even thousands of years for plastic to break down so the environmental damage is long-lasting. It affects all organisms in the food chain from tiny species like plankton to whales.

Bottled water is bad for the environment and it’s easier to fill up a cup full of the filtered tap.  Bottled waters should be banned. Remember when people get bottled water, think about the animals and the future of the Earth. What’s it going to be, saving the future of the planet and animals from plastic pollution, or getting bottled water?
